They Were Here First

With its scientific name Nasalis larvatus, the proboscis monkey is native only to the island of Borneo in Indonesia. Its biome is the rainforest. The proboscis monkey  lives in the watery limbo between sea and river, where salt and fresh water mingle in the roots of mangrove trees. The main characteristic is its large fleshy nose. Their noses swell and turn red when they become excited or angry, producing a loud honking noise as they see danger approach. The proboscis monkeys have huge pot bellies which make them look pregnant; their stomachs are divided into compartments and filled with cellulose digesting bacteria. They have long tails as long as their body used for balance.
We can blame deforestation for the endangerment of this species. Proboscis monkeys can only survive with Borneo’s vegetations and forests. Borneo’s forests are being devoured by settlement, agriculture, swamp drainage, mining, hunting, shrimp farming and fires.
Proboscis monkeys are particularly threatened because one of their preferred habitats is costal lowland forests, locations which are also often preferentially developed or cultivated by people.Threats such as human-induced habitat loss and degradation, harvesting (hunting/gathering), pollution, natural disasters and human disturbance are the main causes of their disappearance.
